North Center Street Underpass to Close for Up to Six Weeks Beginning October 19
Oct 9, 2026
WINDER, Ga. — The North Center Street underpass in downtown Winder will close to through traffic for up to six weeks beginning Monday, October 19, as construction crews complete stormwater drainage improvements.
The closure will affect North Center Street between West May Street and West Athens Street. All through traffic will be prohibited except for emergency vehicles, which will have access through a designated lane throughout construction.
The closure is part of the City's ongoing Center Street Stormwater Outfall Project, which aims to address persistent flooding at the underpass and improve drainage for nearby properties. The project includes installation of a new stormwater system designed to reduce flooding risks along the corridor.
Contractor Summit Construction expects the road to remain closed for up to six weeks, although the schedule is weather-dependent and the road could reopen sooner.
Access to businesses along Center Street will be maintained during construction except for occasional brief driveway closures that will be coordinated with business owners.
Electronic message boards will be placed near the construction area in advance of the closure to alert motorists. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes and allow additional travel time.
Additional project information, including a construction map, is available at https://www.cityofwinder.com/government/departments/engineering_inspections/center_street_project.php.
