James “J.R.” Ridley Parrish’s life quote is “To one whom much is given, much should be returned.” This quote not only reflects J.R.’s character but also reflects the many services he has provided to the City of Winder since 1958 and continues to do so today.
J.R. is a very dedicated and loyal man. He has served the City of Winder as councilman for 20 years and credits his wife of 59 years (and counting!), Carole, for motivating and inspiring him. J.R. chose to get involved in politics because of his desire to give back to his city and county.
J.R. and his wife have four daughters (three surviving), six granddaughters, two grandsons and one great-grandson. He served in the U.S. Army for two years at Fort Bragg and has been a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1959 where he serves as the Chairman Emeritus of the Finance Committee, a Sunday School Teacher and President of the W.Y. Smith Sunday School Class. He also served as the Administrative Board Chairman.
Anyone who knows J.R. knows that he and Carole are avid fans of the Auburn Tigers. J.R. began his tenure at Auburn University in 1951, then Alabama Polytechnic Institute, and continues to support his alma mater by endowing scholarships to The College of Business and the athletic program. He and his wife were highlighted during halftime of the 2013 Iron Bowl for attending their 63rd bowl game in a row!
J.R.’s chosen profession was in the industrial thread industry where he worked 40 years. Since retirement, he has thoroughly enjoyed his time playing golf at Chimneys Golf Course, reading on his Kindle and working crossword puzzles and in his rock garden, and spending time with his family.
