Water Division Water System The service area of the City of Winder Water System is approximately 114 square miles. The system currently consists of approximately 350 miles of water main, most of which vary from 6" to 12" in size. The system has 6 pump stations, 7 elevated storage tanks and 1 ground level storage tank. The City of Winder and the surrounding area are served by two water treatment plants, the Highway 29 Water Treatment Plant and the Highway 53 Water Treatment Plant. The Hwy 29 plant was built in the 1960s as a 1 million gallon per day (mgd) plant, and although it has been updated, its capacity remains 1 mgd. The Hwy 53 plant was built as a 2 mgd plant in the early 1970s, expanded in the late 1980s to 4 mgd, and modified again in 1999-2000 for a maximum capacity of 6.1 mgd. The current system one-day treatment maximum capacity is 7.1 mgd. In addition, Winder has agreements in place to purchase water from other jurisdictions, should the need arise. In 1995, an agreement for up to 300,000 gallons per day (with more available on a case-by-case basis) was reached with the Barrow County Water and Sewer Authority. In 1998, an agreement was reached with the Walton County Water and Sewer Authority for up to 1 million gallons per day; the current piping infrastructure limits actual flow to about 300,000 gallons per day. In 2002, the City signed an agreement with Barrow County for up to 5 million gallons per day from the Bear Creek Reservoir and Treatment Facility. The City can currently physically receive approximately 800,000 gallons per day from Bear Creek Reservoir. Current improvements underway in the county system should make the majority of the balance available to the City by Summer of 2003. |
